The Hinckley-Merrimac-Urban Land soils (found on the southwestern end of Thompson) are very deep, nearly level to steep, excessively drained soils formed in sandy and loamy glacial outwash overlying stratified sand and gravel, and areas of urban land. These soils are usually found in major stream valleys and on coastal plains.

These soils are generally found on steep hillsides in the Boston Basin.Dr John Alroy from Macquarie University in Sydney has used the fossil record of the ocean, dating back more than 500 million years, to study how major changes in marine animal groups take place. In the course of the past 540 million years, marine animals have undergone several mass extinctions that saw dominant life forms suddenly replaced by others, he says. For example, about 250 million years ago, species of animals known as lamp shells, which had dominated sea-beds, were suddenly replaced by clams and snails. Thanks to this and dedicated funding from NOAA to analyze samples, since 2004 scientists have performed necropsies on 1 out of every 3 killer whales that strand in the North Pacific – a remarkable 1600% increase in effort. With such limited opportunity to do comprehensive sampling and studies, the study’s authors noted the disturbing fact that, until recently, less than 2% of those dead killer whales were thoroughly examined. The data collected – on causes of death, contaminants, and genetics -are already being used to help recover endangered killer whale populations. “Each stranded orca should be viewed as a unique opportunity to enhance our understanding of this magnificent species,” says co-author and veterinary pathologist Stephen Raverty.
